Hundreds of Deaf and Hearing Friends gathered at Epworth Baptish Church to say farewell and celbrate the life of Peter Orford on Friday 19th June. Peter and his wife Sue have been well known in the Deaf community. Peter had suffered from prostate cancer but to the end he had continued to serve and be involved with the Deaf community.
Peter had taught for many years at Doncaster School for the Deaf where he was much loved by his students many of who came to the funeral and many more sent the best regards, More recently, after his retirement, he had focussed on gaining qualifications as a Sign Language Interpreter
He had a long history of service to the Deaf Christian and Churches and among other things maintained the old Hands Together website.
Jireh
In the sermon Ian Richardon reminded us of the significance of the word "Jireh" in Peter's life and how he named his house, his car numberplate and his e-mail adress "jireh" . Peter knew the "God who provides" (Jehovah Jirah)and lived generouly trusting God to providefor all his needs.
The service had lively worship songs with a accompanied by guitar keyboard bass and drums, and included a time of open prayer in which deaf and hearing friends thanked Gid for a wonderful and inspiring life.
One non-Christian aquaintance said afterwards "I'd met Peter but it is only after attending this service I really understood what made Peter the sort of man he was. It all just clicked into place
The service was iled by Ian Richardon, and Derek Hawkins gave the eulogy. Gerald Burns and Andrew Clarke read from the scriptures and the service was interpreted by interpreted by Mark Smith and Karen Mettam
After the service Peter's wife Sue and their family welcomed a large group back to the their home Jireh where th same hospitality Peter had offered to many in his life was enjoyed by all. The whole day was a wonderful tribute to a wonderful man and glorified the God in whom he trusted.
Photographs
Peter was a keen photographer and has left a lot of pictures for us to rmember him by. Many of his of his photos are on the web at http://picasaweb.google.com/porford.
Peter's facebook page has been turned into a wonderful tribute as many of his "Facebook friends" have left tributes. Some who were not already friends on Facebook have wanted to take a look but as Peter is not their to approve them as friends are unable to view the tributes. A (pretty random) selection of them are copied below..
