Welcome to this site where you can learn more about the Well Dressing at the vicarage well in Chester Green.

What is a well dressing? It's not wearing you posh clothes!! Well Dressing is a traditional Derbyshire custom that attracts visitors from all over the UK when old wells are decorated. A mosaic picture, built up from natural materials—flower petals, seeds, grasses, leaves, tree bark, berries and moss – is pressed into a 1 inch base of clay, which is held within a wooden frame. and then used to decorate a well. The themes for the well dressings are traditionally of a religious nature, often portraying Biblical themes.

Chester Green is an area of Derby with a history going back to Roman times. The Chester Green Well Dressing this year was the weekend of 19th/20th June. The well which will be dressed was in Mark Smith’s mgrds.co.uk large garden and used to supply water to the Roman fort of Derventio.(Mark is the chaplain among Deaf people in Derby and Derbyshire)
This years well dressing took the theme "Heaven on Earth" and was well supported by the local community and the Deaf community with Sign Language support at all events
It was good to be joined by Deaf people from Leicester for this event
Among the events happenning on the Saturday were the Blessing of the well, a ceileidh, a flower festival and cream teas and a barbecue.
