The Revd. Mark Smith Smith is moving from from his post as Chaplain among Deaf People in Derby to minister to the Deaf Community in West Yorkshire and the Dales. He will also be Vicar of Rawdon in the North West of Leeds.
The Diocese of Yorkshire and the Dales is a new Diocese in the Church of England formed by combining the Dioceses Ripon and Leeds, Wakefield and Bradford. Mark wil minister with existing Deaf congregations in Barnsley , Bradford, Halifax, Leeds and Harrogate as well as developing the work in Wakefield and Huddersfield and other smaller towns.
Mark will work alongside the Rev Rachel Wilson. Rachel has been working alone in the region since the retirement of the Rev Bob Shrine (Deaf) whose ministry ion the area has been greatly appreciated. Mark says "I'll be sad to be leaving Derby but will be glad to take on this new challenge. and look forward to woking with Rachel and the Deaf Leadership Team in West Yorkshire.
Mark wil take up his post on July 15th this year.
Mark's wife Anna will be know to many as a BSL interpreter and Teacher of the Deaf. She Teaches Mathematics in Doncaster School to the Deaf and will continue that work with a long commute. Anna is a Trustee of "Go Sign" and was part with the group of that set up DY4C.
Mark Has been Chaplain in Derby for 10 years, and in involved with the Deaf Community for around 15 years. He has been ordained for 35 years and brings experience in a range of parish and other posts to the work. He is also know in the wider community and an enthusiastic Paraglider Pilot and Dancer.
